Primary Mission of the Preacher is to Preach the Gospel

This is longer than I usually put in but it is an awesome article that I got from our son Ken Z Scott that was actually from his friend, Jim.  I was asked to post it and I thought this was a good spot.

He is covering a topic on which I have been considering writing.  I may still write something but this is certainly something that should stir all of our hearts and cause us to examine our hearts.  We need revival.  Where does it begin?  In me.

Ken Z Scott

THE PRIMARY MISSION OF THE PREACHER IS TO PREACH THE GOSPEL!

Jesus came into this world to seek and to save the lost. The Son of God didn’t come into the world to condemn the world, but to save it! The world was, and is, ALREADY condemned. Jesus Christ came to die for the UNGODLY. Most of the people I have the opportunity to speak or preach to fall solidly in that category. Jesus was THE sacrifice lamb, the sins of the ungodly were laid on him, and in the shedding of his blood there is redemption and reconciliation; “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him.” Like the song says, “He is mighty to save!” Jesus is mighty to save! I am not ashamed of the gospel OF CHRIST, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

You, like Paul, have been given “the ministry of reconciliation.” Like the apostle, you are an “ambassador for Christ,” speaking in Christ’s behalf as though he himself were speaking and imploring men to be reconciled to God through you. Your task is to display Christ crucified before the world, as the ONLY remedy for sin; the ONLY redemption from sin; and the ONLY salvation from eternal death! It is not your mission to condemn the world, it is already condemned. It IS your mission to reconcile men to God.

At this late season in my life, I refuse to be concerned with the censures of others that claim the “good news” of the gospel is really the “bad news” that “you’re going to hell because of your sins.” Strictly speaking, that isn’t the GOSPEL, it’s the LAW. The law is good when it is used lawfully, that is for the purpose it was given: to be “our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.” The law brings the knowledge of sin, and that is how it should be used: to bring men to the point of desperation where they realize what they are, and who God is.

God’s word is sharp. Will you wield it as a butcher in your zeal, or will you use it as a wise surgeon does–to repair and to heal, and sometimes to excise malignant cancers?

Do you care more for how you appear to men? Do you care more that your preaching be “polished?” Do you care more for whether your peers esteem you or your message? Do you spend your leisure time with the TV, DVDs, and video games? Do you indulge any sin in secret? Are you guilty of gluttony? Do your time and money belong to the Lord? Are you a vessel meet for the Master’s use? Do you labor in fervent prayer with God? Do you diligently study to show yourself approved UNTO GOD? Do you expect to meet God in prayer and in his word each and every day? These are some of the questions the Holy Spirit has impressed on me concerning myself. Examine yourself.

Separate yourself unto God. Forego the pleasures of earth even though they may be lawful. Set your sights on eternity. Like Abraham, seek after that city whose builder and maker is GOD! Draw near to God for HE is your exceeding great reward!

Be compelled to tell the lost about the abundant love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, and apply it indiscriminately to all–you are commanded by the Lord to preach the gospel to “every” creature.

When you warn the lost about the wages of their sins, is it after you’ve agonized in prayer pleading and interceding for them before God–that HE will open their eyes and save them! Of George Whitefield it is said, “He seldom if ever got through a sermon without tears.” WHERE ARE YOUR TEARS, PREACHER?

Dare you stand before men on behalf of Christ without your heart melted in your breast? Do you have the mind which Jeremiah had? Consider his heart for the obstinate sinners of his day: “But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive.” (Jer 13:17)

The professing church is captivated by the world. Pastors, Evangelists and teachers are in bondage to pornography and the fires of heart holiness are extinguished.. The church has become a center for drama and entertainment, instead of a bastion of righteousness. Sound biblical doctrine is jettisoned in favor of messages of self-help so that men can have their “best life now.” Many men of God today are light and vain persons that make people laugh and feel good–gone are the days when preachers were sober-minded and diligent to guard the flock from wolves, imploring men to repent and put their faith in Christ. Today people are “made” Christians and “told” they are saved, by repeating a prayer and occupying a pew on Sunday morning, even though they have never felt godly sorrow for their sins, they have never hungered and thirst after righteousness, they have never loathed their sins, nor abhorred their self on account of them, they have never come to hate sin, and they have never found, as John Flavel put it, “Christ altogether lovely!” HAVE YOU STILL NO TEARS, PREACHER?

When YOU plead with the lost to repent, is it because you’ve fixed your eyes firmly on eternity, having removed them from the vanities of this earth? When you plead with them to repent and believe the gospel is it because hell’s fire is so real in your mind your can feel the heat scorching the bottom of your feet, and because you can hear the weeping and wailing cries of the eternally damned ringing in your ears? If you’re overcome with passion is it because some of your hearers may never hear the gospel again, and because you may never have another chance to preach the gospel again? HAVE YOU STILL NO TEARS, PREACHER?

We warn the lost of sin’s consequences, of God’s holy standard of perfect righteousness by which every person’s life will be measured, of the judgment to come, and of the bliss of heaven and the torment of hell.

But the central message of the gospel of Christ is the GRACE OF GOD, the MERCY OF GOD, and the LOVE OF GOD demonstrated in the cross! There Christ expiated sin and propitiated the wrath of God, so that now, whoever believes in him will not perish, but have everlasting life!

Like the angel said, “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” This is the “good news” of the gospel of Christ.

So my street preaching brethren, proclaim the good news of the gospel of God’s grace to those who are still the slaves of sin, as all of us once were. Away with the “God hates you and has an awful, horrible eternity planned for you” message. When you warn the lost, do it in earnest compassion. If you feel compelled to be the “thundering Old Testament prophet pronouncing God’s wrath and judgment on the nations,” remember to sprinkle your pronouncements with the gospel of peace; after all, we are New Covenant believers and carry the primary message of the cross to a world that is without God, without Christ, and without hope.

A Good Way To Start Your Day!

“The accomplishing of the goal of all things is close at hand.  Therefore, help me to keep alert and self-controled so I can pray.  More than anything, help me to keep loving your people, Yeshua, actively because love covers many sins.”  1 Peter 4:7-8

1.  PRIORITIES
I pray this every morning and it helps me to keep things in perspective.  The first thing this verse says to me is “Get your priorities straight.”  One time I spilled the homemade chicken noodle soup (with homemade noodles) upside down on the floor.  I was serving dear friends who had asked for this specifically.  I had just been thinking about how that we needed to keep our focus on Jesus.  My temptation was to cry and get angry with myself and ruin the evening for my guests and my family and myself.  I checked the response to the disaster with the  as a prayer I sent immediately to Jesus “Lord, help me to understand in my heart that 10,000 years from now this is really not going to matter at all.“  He gave me peace.  We went out to fast food and had a delightful time of fellowship in spite of the food disaster.  God says, “The accomplishing of all things is close at hand.”  We do not need to be afraid but we do need to be ready.

2.  Help Me Keep Alert So I Can Pray
The second prayer I found in this verse tells me of the need to keep alert in order to pray.  Have you ever tried to pray only to have your mind try to figure out how you were going to do a task for the day?  When I am in prayer and I find my mind wandering I pray this verse, “Lord, help me to focus.  Help me to keep alert so I can pray.  I want to spend this time with You!”  He helps me.  Some days the battle has to take place repeatedly but I find that it is very rewarding to persist.  I have strength for the day through prayer with my Lord.  Also, I want to stay alert to the needs of others around me so I can lift them up in prayer.

3.  Most Important — Love
The third aspect of this prayer is, “Lord, help me to love your people.”  OooH.  Why should this be so hard?  Is it not because of high expectations?  We expect God’s people to be perfect (such as we are not!).  When they fail in this area, we are disappointed and all out-of-sorts with them.  God wants us to love each other, overlooking one another’s faults.  So when I begin praying I ask God to help me get my priorities straight and remember what is important.  Then I ask Him to help me focus and pray.  Then I ask that He help me love His children.  I ask that He helps me to love with His love.  Praise God for that unbelieveable miraculous love that He has for us.  Praise God that He forgives me!  Praise God that He loves me!

It is a good way to start the day.

God’s Healing Plan

After losing 100 pounds in two years, I was distressed recently to find myself gaining weight.  I had not changed my diet and could not see a reason for the gain.  I had my thyroid checked since I’ve had a deficient thyroid for 35 years but to my chagrin, it was normal.  That left one problem — possible congestive heart failure. My father suffered from that problem the last 20 years of his life.  I really didn’t want it to be my problem.

Tuesday morning before I found out my thyroid was normal, Abba was talking to me during my prayer time.  He reminded me that Jesus paid a horrible price for our healing.  He then told me that the enemy of our souls is constantly trying to convince us that we cannot be healed because the problem is our fault.  Maybe it was caused by sin in our lives or poor choices we made.  Satan says we cannot be healed because we don’t deserve it.

Abba reminded me that none of us deserve God’s favor.  Who deserves to be healed?  We are all sinners and God’s Mercy and Grace is the ‘unmerited favor of God.’  It Bible says that God’s mercy is fresh every morning.  We CAN go to God and receive healing from Him because Jesus paid the price.

I was very blessed but did not understand at that time what it was all about.  A few hours later I was facing the possibility of Congestive Heart Failure.  I had many of the symptoms.  Tuesday night I had so much chest pain I had to take a nitro.  As I lay in bed, I prayed and reminded Abba of His revelation to me that morning and laid claim to His promises.  I told the Lord that I was in His hands to do with what He wanted.  I soon was able to go to sleep.

The next day I saw my doctor and he has me on water pills plus low salt.  He told me, “Marvine, this is not a race you are in but a casual stroll.”  He said that my tests last year showed I did NOT have CHF at that time.  He is going to send me to a specialist but said, “Let’s pray about it.  Maybe God will heal you.”

I have to report that I feel better than I have in weeks.  I have energy.  I have had very few twinges in my chest.  I am dropping water weight.  I know my God has healed me and I give Him praise.  His promises are ‘yea and amen.’  Let’s believe Him.

“Dear friend, I am praying that everything prosper with you and that you be in good health, as I know you are prospering spiritually.” 3Jn 1:2

Having Conversation with Almighty God

I have read the Bbible through many times and the Psalms through even more.  One of my favorites is the 32nd Psalm but I have never before realized that two very familiar verses of this beautiful Psalm of David is a conversation between David and His Lord.

PRAYER TO GOD
“You are a hiding place for me.  You will keep me from distress; you will surround me with songs of deliverance.”  Psalms 32:7
GOD’S RESPONSE
“I will instruct you in this way that you are to go.  I will give you counsel: my eyes will be watching you.”  Psalms 32:8

Isn’t it beautiful to see this graphic example of the loving attention of our Marvelous Creator with the promise of His protection and care!  In 1 John 5 we find a precious thought:

“This is the confidence we have in his presence: if we ask anything that accords with his will, he hears us.  And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – then we know that we have what we have asked from him.  1 John 5:14-15

Here again we have the Lord carefully listening to the prayers of His children and the promise that if we ask according to His will, He hears and the answer is “yes.”  I do love the fact that God’s Loving Caring eyes are upon us, protecting us and waiting for us to talk to Him.  What a God!  What a Savior!  What a Friend!

PRAYING PROTECTION

This is a prayer for additional armor that I pray after putting on the armor of God.  I am listing the Scriptures I refer to in my prayer.  The quotations are taken from the Complete Jewish Bible.

“Father, I thank you that underneath are the everlasting arms.  I am sheltered under the wings of Almighty God. You go before me to prepare the way.  You are my Rear Guard.  You protect my head in battle.  Your Righteousness protects me on my right hand and my left.  Thank you, Father, for your all encompassing protection and love.”

EVERLASTING ARMS

“The God of old is a dwelling-place, with everlasting arms beneath.  He expelled the enemy before you and he said, ‘Destroy!’”  Deut. 33:27

UNDER THE WINGS OF ALMIGHTY GOD
“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his truth is a shield and protection.”  Psalms 91:4

THE LORD GOES BEFORE TO PREPARE THE WAY  (many more such as Isa. 45:2)
“And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee:  fear not neither be dismayed.”  Deut. 31:8
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night:”  Exo.  13:21
“The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.”  Deut 31:3

THE LORD WILL BE MY REAR GUARD  (King James says ‘rereward’)
Isa 52:12  You need not leave in haste, you do not have to flee; for ADONAI will go ahead of you, and the God of Isra’el will also be behind you.
Isa 58:8  Then your light will burst forth like the morning, your new skin will quickly grow over your wound; your righteousness will precede you, and ADONAI’s glory will follow you.

YOU PROTECT MY HEAD IN BATTLE
Psa 140:7  ADONAI, Adonai, my saving strength, my helmet shielding my head in battle,

YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS GUARDS MY RIGHT HAND AND MY LEFT
2Co 6:7  By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, KJV

Armor of God

Here is a small study of some verses I particularly enjoy.  I pray these additional pieces of armor when I put on the whole armor of God listed in Ephesians 6.  Enjoy.

BARRIOR OF SEPARATION

Exo 14:20  It stationed itself between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Isra’el – there was cloud and darkness here, but light by night there; so that the one did not come near the other all night long.

ARMOUR OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (left hand and right hand)

2Co 6:7  By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

ARMOR OF LIGHT

Rom 13:12  The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Neh 9:19  still, you, in your great compassion, did not abandon them in the desert. The column of cloud did not leave them by day; it kept leading them along the way. By night the column of fire kept showing them light and the path to take.

Psa 27:1  By David: ADONAI is my light and salvation; whom do I need to fear? ADONAI is the stronghold of my life; of whom should I be afraid? Psa 4:6  Many ask, “Who can show us some good?” ADONAI, lift the light of your face over us!

Psa 139:11  If I say, “Let darkness surround me, let the light around me be night,”

GLITTERING SPEAR

Hab 3:11  The sun and moon stand still in the sky at the light of your arrows speeding by, at the gleam of your glittering spear.

MOUNTAINS OF PROTECTION

Psa 125:2  Yerushalayim! Mountains all around it! Thus ADONAI is around his people henceforth and forever.

ANGEL OF THE LORD ENCAMPS US

Psa 34:7  The angel of Adonai, who encamps around those who fear him, delivers them.

ADONAI WILL FIGHT AGAINST THOSE WHO FIGHT AGAINST US

1Sa 2:10  those who fight ADONAI will be shattered; he will thunder against them in heaven ADONAI will judge the ends of the earth. He will strengthen his king and enhance the power of his anointed.”

Psa 35:1  By David: ADONAI, oppose those who oppose me; fight against those who fight against me.

Zech. 14:3  Then ADONAI will go out and fight against those nations, fighting as on a day of battle.

Psalms 35:5  May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of Adonai to drive them on.

WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD  - EPHESIANS

(Eph 6:11)  Use all the armor and weaponry that God provides, so that you will be able to stand against the deceptive tactics of the Adversary.

(Eph 6:12)  For we are not struggling against human beings, but against the rulers, authorities and cosmic powers governing this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realm.

(Eph 6:13)  So take up every piece of war equipment God provides; so that when the evil day comes, you will be able to resist; and when the battle is won, you will still be standing.

1.      BELT OF TRUTH

2.      BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

3.      READINESS ON YOUR FEET

4.      SHIELD OF TRUST

5.      HELMET OF DELIVERANCE

6.      SWORD GIVEN BY THE SPIRIT (GOD’S WORD)

7.      PRAYER

(Eph 6:14)  Therefore, stand! Have the belt of truth buckled around your waist, put on righteousness for a breastplate,

(Eph 6:15)  and wear on your feet the readiness that comes from the Good News of shalom.

(Eph 6:16)  Always carry the shield of trust, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One.

(Eph 6:17)  And take the helmet of deliverance; along with the sword given by the Spirit, that is, the Word of God;

(Eph 6:18)  as you pray at all times, with all kinds of prayers and requests, in the Spirit, vigilantly and persistently, for all God’s people.

A POWERFUL PRAYER

The God of Shalom (Peace) brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Yeshua (Jesus), by the blood of an eternal covenant.  May God equip you with every good thing you need to do his will; and may he do in us whatever pleases him; through Yeshua the Messiah.  To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.”  Hebrews 13:20-21

I was especially blessed with these verses this morning as I was in prayer.  First there is the awesome declaration and holy worship of the God of Shalom who raised Jesus from the dead by the blood of an eternal covenant.  When you think about that, an eternal covenant is not a last minute decision.  What a marvelous God we serve — One who is so far above us that we truly do not understand.  We believe, receive and worship.

Our prayer is that this Marvelous God, our Lord and Savior, will equip us with every good thing we need to do His Will!  Whose will?  His.  He will equip us to do HIS WILL!  Does God want you to do something for Him?  Yes.  Do you know what it is?  Ask.  Can you do it?  Yes.  If God calls us, He will equip us to do His will!

Then we totally yield ourselves.  Listen to this:  “Lord, do in me whatever pleases you, through Yeshua the Messiah.” Do we trust Him enough to pray that prayer and then to continue on in worship.  “Oh God, to You be glory forever and ever amen.” Why are we afraid?  Jesus asked His disciples when He calmed the sea, “Why did you doubt?”  Over and over He says not to be afraid.  Oh, beloved, let’s trust God and pray this awesome prayer today?  Let’s embrace His will in our lives today.  Let’s let Him do whatever pleases Him in us today!

Stop Being Angry

Stop being angry, put aside rage, and don’t be upset — it leads to evil.”  Psalms 37:8

We hear a lot about how destructive anger is but do we think that it is an indulgence?  We allow ourselves the right to be angry about things — just for a little while!  But God says that we have to stop it!  We have to put it aside because when we allow ourselves to even get upset, this will lead to evil!

I heard someone talk about anger 30 some years ago.  Here was the thought.  Have you ever noticed how you can be in a full blown argument with your husband (or wife) and you firmly believe that you cannot help yourself because he (or she) simply makes you SO ANGRY!  However, when in this rage, if the phone rings, you pick it up (mid-sentence) and sweetly answer, ‘Hello”?  What happened to your being unable to control your anger?

The point is we CAN allow ourselves to indulge in our anger for just a little or we CAN stop it immediately.  Again, the thing I have found the most effective is to get alone with God for a bit.  Actually give the anger to God.  Thank Him for every good thing you can remember about the person.  If it is someone outside the home who has done something destructive, you can thank God that he is someone for whom Christ died.  You can ask God to bless him with salvation (if not saved), joy and peace.  When we surrender our will to Christ, we gain victory.  The bible says we are to ‘bless — not curse.’

The result of giving our anger to God immediately, is He gives us joy and peace plus we are protected then from being led into sin.  We have victorious joy!

God is in Charge

Come, let us return to Adonai; for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck, and he will bind our wounds.  After two days, he will revive us; on the third day, he will raise us up; and we wil live in his presence.  Let us know, let us strive to know Adonai.  That he will come is as certain as morning; he will come to us like the rain, like the spring rains that water the earth.”  Hoshea 6:1-3  Complete Jewish Bible

I do not pretend to be a prophetic scholar but I find these verses drawing my attention again and again.  I find this fascinating.  Our God has promised to heal us when we return to Him.  He says, “After two days, he will revive us.”  Here’s a thought to ponder.  If a day is a thousand years and a thousand years a day, could this be a reviving two thousand years after Jesus died and rose again?  At the resurrection He conquered death and Satan.  We are now experiencing a revival amongst God’s people.

Next the third day He raises us up to live with Him forever. We are waiting for His return.  Even so come Lord Jesus!

The challenge is to “know Adonai (God).”  “Let us strive to know Adonai.”   Our goal should be to know Him better!  Let’s put in an effort and work at knowing Him better!  Let us strive to know Him!  His coming again is as certain as the coming of morning following night.  I can hardly wait!!
